Introduction
- The ICFAI University, Dehradun (IUD) was established under the provisions of The ICFAI University Act 2003 (Act 16 of 2003) enacted by the State of Uttarakhand.
- The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.
- This policy shall be called the “Admission Policy & Selection Procedure for Ph.D. Program - summer, 2026” (APSPPP-S-2026) for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) awarded by IUD.
- The ICFAI University, Dehradun, offers admission into the Ph.D. program on both the basis i.e. full-time and part-time. and part-time.
- While every effort has been made to ensure that the information contained in this document is accurate at the time of publication, all matters that it covers may be subject to change without notice. IUD reserves the exclusive right to change or withdraw, without notice, any statement in this document.

Program Structure
Eligibility criteria for admission to the Ph.D. Programme
The following are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. program for the various schools of IUD (ICFAI Business School, ICFAI Tech School, ICFAI Law School, and ICFAI Education School):

Candidate for admission to the Ph.D. program shall have successfully completed:
- A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree program after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree program or a 2- year/4-semester master’s degree program after a 3-year bachelor’s degree program or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
- OR
- A M.Phil. degree from any recognized university with at least 55% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade in a point scale (wherever the grading system is followed).
- OR
- A 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree program with at least 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale, wherever the grading system is followed.
- Candidates in the final year of their master’s program who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before a specified date indicated by the IUD can apply for admissions. For short-listing purposes, their performance till the preceding semester/year would be considered but their admission would be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced.
For any other national or international degree, the scale will be interpolated accordingly. An equivalence committee will be constituted by the Vice-Chancellor (VC) to consider applications other than covered under above Clause (2.1, & 2.2). The minimum eligibility criteria indicated above is only an enabling clause. Ph.D. Admission Committee (hereafter referred to as PAC) constituted by the VC may fix higher criteria at the time of shortlisting keeping in view the number of candidates, minimum background to cope with the program. Part-time candidate is required to submit a ‘No Objection Certificate’ on a proper letterhead from the competent authority of the organization in which he/she is presently working clearly stating that the candidate is permitted to pursue Ph.D. on a part-time basis and his/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for completion of coursework and carry out doctoral research.
Part-time candidates are required to submit a ‘No Objection Certificate’ on a proper letterhead from the competent authority of the organization in which he/she is presently working clearly stating that the candidate 2 is permitted to pursue Ph.D. on a part-time basis and his/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for completion of coursework and carry out doctoral research.
Duration of the Ph.D. Program
- Ph.D. program shall be for a minimum duration of three (03) years, including coursework, and a maximum of six (06) years from the date of admission to the Ph.D. program.
- Extension beyond the above limits will have to be approved by the Vice-Chancellor based on the recommendations of the Supervisor, concerned Dean/HoD and Research and Development Cell, provided, however, that the total period for completion of a Ph.D. program should not exceed eight (8) years from the date of admission in the Ph.D. program. One time extension can be for a maximum of six (6) months only.
- Female Ph.D. scholars and Persons with Disabilities (having more than 40% disability) may be allowed an additional relaxation of two (2) years; however, the total period for completion of a Ph.D. program in such cases should not exceed ten (10) years from the date of admission in the Ph.D. program.
- Upon approval of the extension from the concerned authority, the candidate has to pay the semester fee for which the extension period is granted.
- For the candidate with exceptional performance, the minimum duration of the Ph.D. program may be reduced after the approval of the Vice-Chancellor, but not beyond more than six months.
Intake for Ph.D. Admission 2026-27 - Summer Session
The admission into the Ph.D. program will be taken under the following categories:
- Category-1: Candidates who qualify for fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and similar National level tests.
- Category-2: Candidates who qualify for NET in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and similar National level tests.
- Category-3A: Candidates who qualify for “Admission to Ph.D. Only” in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED or similar national-level tests, provided they possess a valid certificate issued on or after 30/06/2025.
- Category-3B: Candidate other than Category 1, 2 & 3A

Admission Modalities
Procedure for Admission
- The candidate desired to seek admission to a Ph.D. Program at IUD shall apply for the same on the prescribed Application Form by the due date announced by IUD.
- The applications will be scrutinized by the Ph.D. Admission Committee-2026 (PAC-2026) constituted by the Vice-Chancellor.
- UGC NET under Category-2 and Category-3A will be used as an entrance test for Ph.D. admission.
- Candidates under Category-3B are required to appear in the entrance test named ‘IUD Research Entrance Test 2026 (IUDRET-2026)’. IUDRET-2026 will be an objective-type test of 50 questions to be attempted in 2 hours. The entrance will be held offline at IUD Campus only on the prescribed date.
- An interview/viva-voce for all categories will be organized by the IUD wherein the candidate is required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted committee. Interview will be conducted on the prescribed date at IUD campus only.
- For applicants outside India, the university may conduct entrance examinations and interviews in online mode.

- A combined merit list will be prepared for Category 2, 3A and 3B based on the prescribed weightage criteria, subject to normalization/equivalence wherever applicable. The list of selected candidates under Category 1 and Category 2 & 3 (A & B) will be separately published on IUD website.
- In case of an unfilled vacancy in either category, candidate(s) from another category may be considered to fill the vacant seats in the order of merit during the second phase.
- The last date of fee submission is taken as last date of admission in the Ph.D. Program.
How to Apply
Applicants can apply online by filling out the Application Form using the link (https://iudehradun.edu.in/phd-program) and making a payment of ₹ 500 towards the cost of the Application using Credit / Debit Card (Visa / Master Card / Internet Banking) through a secure internet payment gateway. Applicants applying online should upload their passport-size color photograph while filling out the Online Application. After submitting the online application form, applicants are required to email proof of submission/payment to research@iudehradun.edu.in. Candidates are advised to check the eligibility criteria, availability of seats in the concerned subject before filling the application form. In no case, application fee will be refunded.

Applicants are required to enclose self-attested copies of the following certificates:
- Date of Birth Certificate / Class X Certificate.
- Mark Sheets and Certificates of Class X, XII, UG, PG.
- M.Phil./JRF/NET/GATE/CEED etc. Certificate (if any)
- NOC from the competent authority (original) for part-time Ph.D.
- Migration Certificate (at the time of admission)

IUDRET-2026
The test paper for each subject will be an objective type, to be attempted in 2 hours. There will be no negative marking. The questions shall be multiple-choice/objective-type questions. The paper consists of Analytical Reasoning & Research Methodology (20 marks) and subject-specific topics (30 marks). The syllabi for IUDRET-2026 will be made available on the IUD website in due time.

Domicile:
To avail the domicile benefits in the program fee, candidate domicile certificate is required at the time of registration.
Semester Fee:
The semester fee must be paid at the beginning of each semester, as per the schedule notified by the Research and Development Cell, and shall continue up to the submission of the thesis.
Note:
Ph.D. program fee mentioned above is for the minimum duration of the program (i.e. six semesters). Students have to pay the respective semester fee to continue in the program, if he/she takes additional time beyond the stipulated minimum duration to complete the program.
Convocation Fee:
Convocation Fee of ₹ 1,000 and Alumni Fee of ₹ 5,000 is to be paid along with the program fee of the final semester.
Thesis Submission Fee:
The fee is to be paid at the time of the thesis submission.
Caution Deposit:
All students are required to pay the caution deposit along with the first semester fee. The caution deposit will be refunded to students on completion of the program. Caution Deposit and Security Deposit are not adjustable against Program Fee and other dues.
